The Canadian Biogas Association (CBA) hosted its third annual Hill Day on June 2 and 3 in Ottawa, ON. The action-packed two days included 11 meetings with 20 government stakeholders and a Meet & Greet evening reception at the Château Laurier, with over 100 attendees, including MPs interested in learning more about biogas.
CBA staff and Board members met with key areas of government at both the ministers’ offices and at the departmental level. This included Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Treasury Board Secretariat, the Privy Council Office, and the Prime Minister’s Office.
Our goals were to request competitive and targeted funding mechanisms for biogas and RNG, and to advocate for regulatory improvements to facilitate development and interconnection across Canada. We reinforced our message that Canada is currently tapping only 14% of its biogas and RNG potential. We also highlighted that investments in new projects continue to flow to the United States following the Inflation Reduction Act, which introduced generous investment tax credits for new biogas operations.
Our key messages included the critical importance of investment tax credits (ITCs) for biogas and the positive impact they would have in spurring sector development in Canada. We continued to emphasize the need for streamlined funding for biogas projects—such as through the Agricultural Clean Technology Fund and Clean Fuels Fund—that recognize the added benefits of biogas systems. We also maintained that the Clean Fuel Regulations could send a strong signal to the industry in support of additional biogas and RNG projects.
The meetings over the two days had a clear sense of encouragement and recognition of the benefits the biogas industry brings to Canada. One board member noted, “We used to have these meetings and start from square one. Now we can go in and have deeper conversations, since we’ve grown their knowledge of the industry over the years.”
The Canadian Biogas Association will continue to build on the connections made during Hill Day. Members are encouraged to contact the CBA with any questions. It is an honour to support our members in our shared goal of growing the biogas sector to its fullest potential in Canada.
